Sounds simple doesn’t it? But all too often we fail to do this and what results we feel unsupported, overwhelmed, and misunderstood. I am guilty of this all the time. I complain about feeling overwhelmed with things to do. I feel like everyone should read my mind and know exactly what I need to feel supported and then when they don’t read my mind (ha!) I am pissed off and resentful.
Whether it’s at work, home, with your partner, co-worker, or friend. Asking for what you need can be a game changer in the way you feel day to day. It takes some practice but let me teach you what my beautiful life coach taught me about asking for what you need.
STEPS TO ASKING FOR WHAT YOU NEED:
- Be clear and be honest about what you need.
- Take responsibility for asking- and including WHY you want or do don’t want something.
- Knowing there is something you will have to let go of in order to gain this something else.
- Crafting your ask. You are not asking for permission… you are asking for support. Try this:
I feel _____________ because . I would like ______. My intention is to __________________________ for you and for us.
- Reframe your concerns to see how it can be a win/win for everyone involved.
